MiniMonos kids show their true colors

I was forwarded this great YouTube clip the other day on the future of publishing, which gives a clever summary of young people's values.  Watch the whole thing...it gets really good halfway through:

We witness these thoughtful and often astonishingly deep values from our community of kids at MiniMonos all the time.  They love connecting online and also want to make a difference in their real-world lives. They engage with us on Twitter, talking about their favorite books. They are concerned about making sure kids in India have clean water.  They love that we have adopted a baby orangutan at MiniMonos and are campaining to adopt another one.  Unprompted, they pick up trash and talk to each other about recycling.

One of our MiniMonos kids, Emini, told us that she became inspired about the environment through playing MiniMonos.  This led her to join a group of volunteers, picking up trash along a nearby beach and a local newspaper picked up the story and published it.  Here she is, showing the 1800 cigarette butts they saved the foreshore from, amongst other trash they collected. She said: “Me and my friends have recently been aware of the environment.  At lunchtime we just all go together and pick up the rubbish.”

Viper, one of our well-known players on MiniMonos, recently asked other kids on her fan site to express their thoughts about MiniMonos and going green.  Here are a few of their replies:

So far me and my friends have been picking up trash. One day ago we were walking down to the park and we saw a duck swimming in a pond with those things that carry soda around its neck :( we felt so bad, eventually the thing got loose.That is why we NEED to recycle we HAVE to help the world! Get some friends and go green! MiniMonos thanks for changing me i now look at the world a diffrent way ....

MiniMonos Island is as clean as my hair. And trust me, It's VERY clean and the most awesomeness....I'm glad that on MiniMonos, we go Green, Help the Environment, and even help a Baby Orangutan! That is what Going Green means to be.

Don't just leave the lights on down stairs and your not even down there. Thats polluting our planet. Instead of useing the heater. Use a blanket, you dont need a heater to make you worm. Just hug your brother, sister, or your parents.

Minimonos is a game that actually makes recycling seem fun instead of something dorky. Since creating my monkey, I have convinced my family to get a recycling bin...sounds like it must be making a change already!!

Mother Earth has helped us live in her enviroment. Now, it`s our turn to help. Go Green, grow plants, Feed animals, and most of all, GO GREEN. All the trees & flowers help us breathe. Now it`s time to help. The PLANET. No more picking leaves from trees, and no more plucking off pedals from flowers. Instead, grow more. Mother Earth is loving. she lets us cut down trees for houses.
Now, go plant a tree.

I am Emini's Grandad and we are so proud of her and her three little brothers. I'm going to send this link to Emini's two cousins who live on the other side of the world in the hope that they will start something similar there. Kids - if you are picking up rubbish make sure to wear latex gloves - you never know what nasties lurk in rubbish.
