MiniMonos World Book Day Giveaway!

Hey, monkeys!  World Book Day is coming up for UK monkeys on March 7th!  If you don't know about World Book Day, it's a celebration of authors, illustrators, books AND a celebration of reading!

Many of you have told us about your favorite books, so we're celebrating World Book Day with 2 awesome World Book Day author interviews and 2 book giveaways!

Francesca_SimonOur first World Book Day interview is with Francesca Simon, author of the Horrid Henry books, which are about the world’s most mischievous kid!  One LUCKY MONKEY will be winning a WHOLE HEAP of Horrid Henry books -21 books to be exact!

Check out our interview with Francesca:

Do you have any tips for kids who would like to become authors?
First, to read, read, and read. Keep an ideas notebook.  Finish what you start.  And try to combine unusual ideas: why not a ghost romance, or animal sports day?  Think of different genres, and mash two together (magic and school; mystery and family, for example).

Do you ever base your writing on real life events?
Occasionally, some of the Horrid Henry stories are inspired by true life situations, such as the Comfy Black Chair, and Horrid Henry’s Injection.

What were some of your favourite books when you were growing up?
Little Women, Half-Magic, The Three Musketeers, Little House in the Big Woods, A Wrinkle in Time.

What advice would you give kids who are having trouble with writer's block?
I don’t believe in writer’s block. I think there are problems and difficulties waiting to be solved. If you’re stuck on one bit, write the ending. Or another part that you feel confident about.

If you could picture any of your characters as a type of monkey, which character and what kind of monkey?
Miss Battle-Axe would make a good monkey—perhaps a gorilla!

Thank you, Francesca!

How awesome was that, monkeys?  Can you imagine one of your teachers as a gorilla?

If you would like a chance to win a full set of the Horrid Henry books and a 1-Month MiniMonos Gold Membership, answer this question:

Which Horrid Henry character did Francesca say would make a good monkey?

Email your answer AND monkeyname to [email protected] with "World Book Day Giveaway #1" as the subject of your email!

If your answer is correct, you'll be in the draw to win the big prize, AND your correct entry will earn you 250 Banana Chips!  Entries must be in by March 12th!

Happy World Book Day, monkeys!  Keep an eye out for our second World Book Day interview, too!

New MiniMonos Eco Cards: One-use products shouldn't last forever!

In today's ever-increasing search for convenience and flexibility, you've probably received a gift card or two  -- e.g. iTunes cards, MiniMonos membership cards, gift cards for a favorite retailer -- from a friend or family member.  Or perhaps you've even given one as a birthday or holiday gift in recent years.

Have you ever stopped to think about what these cards are made of, or just how long they end up lying in landfills once you're done spending the credit on them?

New MiniMonos Eco Card: 1-Month membershipWe realize that these cards provide a quick & easy way to give a gift, but we're left wondering:  Is the Earth paying the price for that convenience we're after?  We think she is.

The majority of gift cards sold around the world are now manufactured from either polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), a lower-cost alternative to the PVC.

ABS plastic has a lifespan of about 4 years!  While that's still better than the incredible 20-25 years PVC cards are meant to last, we believe that's 3 years & 364 days too long.  Not only do these gift cards far outlive their use-by date, PVC and ABS never truly break down. And while they CAN be recycled, they very rarely ARE recycled.

So why are companies still making one-use items out of materials that last forever?

It really doesn't make any sense!

What we do know is this:  we don't want MiniMonos to contribute to the 75 million pounds of plastic card waste ends up thrown away each year.

New MiniMonos Eco Card: 6-Month membershipThat's why we're using Forest Stewardship Certified card stock for our new pre-paid MiniMonos Eco Cards- the very first eco-friendly prepaid gift card to be sold in New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

The benefits of using FSC paper are very clear.  FSC card stock is sustainably produced, and can be recycled or even composted after use.  Not only are we thinking about where our MiniMonos membership cards are coming from, we want to ensure they only last as long as you want them to!

If you want to keep your card because their art is awesome (we think it is), that's great!  But eventually, when you're finished using your MiniMonos Eco Card, we hope you'll recycle it along with your other recyclables, and lessen the load of waste going into your local landfill.

So before you purchase a new gift card for someone, or ask for one for yourself, please stop and consider where that card will end up- in a landfill?  Recycled into another item?  Composted into your garden?  Gift-giving doesn't have to result in more waste items that last for years to come.

Ninja Team Legends: What does your team say about you?

It's almost time for the Ninja Showdown to begin!

If you haven't opened the Door of Destiny yet to discover which team you belong to, check out these legends about what makes each ninja team so unique (and EPIC)!

CraneIconCrazy Cranes: These ninjas are very quiet and still, and are happiest when reading, drawing, or listening to music! They're often underestimated by their rivals because of this calm exterior.

Cranes prefer to sit back and let others brag or boast, but don't let that fool you; once the competition starts, you'll see why Cranes are unmatched in their crazy speed and agility. They love to swoop in and steal the win!

TigerIconTrusty Tigers: Have you ever had a loyal friend who always supports you no matter what happens?  They would definitely fit in with Tigers.

These laid-back ninjas are very hard to provoke, but once you you get them going, you'll find they are fierce defenders who stand up for truth and justice, even when it's a hard thing to do.  Rivals will always think twice about competing against a roaring Tiger!

SnakeIconSneaky Snakes: It's said that Snakes are the sneakiest ninja team around, but we can't find any of them to ask!  They're amazingly clever, and can always find a way out of trouble.

These sly ninjas are known as masters of disguise, so they may not always be what the seem!  They love to ambush their rivals too, so be wary of that ninja next to you- they could be a Snake in disguise!

DragonIconDouble Dragons: These powerful ninjas are proven leaders with a strong, confident nature.  Dragons will always pick the straightest path to victory because they make decisions and then act quickly.

Although they can easily take the lead against any competitor, they're so focused on glory that they may forget they're on a team instead of alone!  It doesn't mean you'll defeat them easily, though: Dragons always regroup to double their determination to win!

Pretty impressive stuff, monkeys! We can't wait for the Ninja Showdown to start- we know you can't either!

Tell us what else we should know about your ninja team's legend!  What are some of your team's favorite things?

The MiniMonos story
Welcome to MiniMonos. We're delighted to meet you.
MiniMonos is a virtual world for children: a place of fun, beauty, discovery, generosity, sustainability and friendship.
We created MiniMonos so that children could have a place of their own, a place that allows them to explore and grow without constant pressure to buy stuff. We also wanted them to have a place that embodied core values like sustainability and generosity, without turning those values into a boring lecture.
But we know we can't build it by ourselves. So join us! Tell us what you need, what you like, and what you don't like. Tell us what makes you laugh and what makes you cry. Let's take this journey together -- and make MiniMonos a great place for our kids.
